M.C. 202

The M.C. 202 Folgore was a fighter produced by Macchi Aeronautica to improve on the  C. 200 which came before it. Considered to be one of the best aircraft operated by the Regia Aeronautica., it served on the Maltese, North African, Eastern, Sicilian, and Croatian Fronts. Powered by the Alfa Romeo license built DB-601 in-line liquid cooled engine, the M.C. 202 marked Italy's advancement to the fighter standards of larger nations. Australian ace Clive Caldwell, who fought a wide variety of German, Italian, and Japanese aircraft stated that the M.C. 202 was one of the best and most undervalued of fighters." Not without its fallbacks, the M.C. 202 suffered from a dangerous tendency to enter spin stalls, and the Serie I-VI had only two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns, which were prone to jamming.

VariantsEdit

The M.C. 202 received very few modifications over its 1,106 unit production.

M.C. 202

Starting with the Serie VII new wings were used, which added one 7.7 Breda-SAFAT machine gun per wing, as well as marking the addition of an armoured windscreen.

M.C. 202AS

Included the addition of dust filters meant for use in North Africa. The lack of detrimental effect meant that all Folgore's soon were AS standard.

M.C. 202CB

Included the (rarely used) addition of underwing hardpoints for small bombs and drop tanks.

M.C. 202EC

EC meaning Esperimento Cannoni, which added a new wing with provisions for a 20mm cannon, with 200 rounds. Allied bombings in Italy in 1944 put an end to Italy's fighter production, and stopping the Folgore at Serie XI. The XII was likely to have included these new wings, with MG 151 cannons. Only one prototype of this model ever flew.

M.C. 202RF

A reconnaissance version of the Folgore, fitted with cameras. Role eventually replaced by the M.C. 205 Veltro.

M.C. 202D

Prototype with a revised radiator placement, resembling that of a P-40.

M.C. 202AR.4

Designated as a Drone Director, paired with a S.79 "radiobomba" as a sort of radio controlled kamikaze bomber.
